Martin Luther King Jr. on riots

“It is as necessary for me to be as vigorous in condemning the conditions which cause people to feel they must engage in riotous activity, as it is for me to condemn riots.

In the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard. Riot’s do not develop out of thin air. Certain conditions continue to exist in our society, which must be condemned as vigorously as we condemn riots...

My hope is that protests are non-violent. My hope is we can avoid riots because riots are self-defeating and socially destructive...

Large segments of white society are more concerned with tranquility and the status quo, than about justice, equality and humanity...

How long will it take? That depends on the federal government, the City Halls of our various cities and in white people to a large extent.”
