In Save Your City, Diane Kalen-Sukra has outlined with clarity the pending demise of our civil society. Facing the harsh reality that our moral and social fiber has frayed such that civility in the public square is almost unrecognizable is critical. I applaud the author for her courage in drawing attention to the ubiquitous and crippling social issues facing communities all around the globe. I also applaud Ms. Kalen-Sukra for devising a blueprint for community change that offers hope and measurable and necessary gains in social capital .
Every community leader should read this book--pen in hand--and then emphatically and energetically implement the strategies Ms. Kalen-Sukra details. That we pursue this change and revive civic education in our modern democracies is of the utmost importance to our future ability to preserve our democratic institutions and civil society. This impacts each of us. I agree vehemently with Ms. Kalen-Sukra that this action is critical to developing the capacity for effective action to address the many complex social, political, economic, and environmental challenges arrayed before us.
